Fabian Society

Fabian Society
   The Society is an association of British socialists which has traditionally advocated the establishment of socialism by gradualist means. It derives its name from the activities of Fabius Maximus, a Roman general who avoided fighting pitched battles but instead worked to achieve his objectives by his strategy of harassing his opponents. In the same way, Fabians in their early years worked to permeate the two main parties of the late nineteenth century (the Conservatives and the Liberals) with their ideas, before becoming a key element in the formation and development of the Labour Party.
   Labour has traditionally followed the Fabian evolutionary route to socialism rather than a more confrontational approach. Several Labour MPs belong to the Society, which continues to hold summer schools, produce research papers and debate political issues.
